I completely understand where you’re coming from! I was a working single mom for years and deficient in exercise. Things that helped me: doing 20-min yoga routines at home (GAIAM.com has a subscription service that’s inexpensive with a ton of different levels of yoga/pilates/tai chi/meditation videos), many of which you can do in 20-min or less. When my daughter was a baby through age 3, I would wear her in an Ergo carrier and take long walks at night. This actually put her to sleep so it was a double-bonus! You could do stroller walks and do lunges, incorporate uphill, etc. Hope this helps!

Try this strategy to permanently reduce cravings: Portion out one serving of your favorite treat, taking a minute to smell it, look at it, and think about it. Take one small bite. If you still want more, repeat, this time chewing the food 20 times. Continue this eating exercise for as long as you want or until you finish the serving (it should take about 10 minutes).

Allan I agree with Prioris’ comment. You may want to step away from the scale and go by measurements (particularly your waistline measurement) and how your clothes are fitting. I know its hard to do that but that number on the scale can fluctuate for so many different reasons. Another suggestion would be maybe not to try to do it all at once maybe take a couple of weeks and get your ‘diet’ down and then add in some exercise. Its possible that too much change too quickly through your metabolism hormones out of whack and they signaled your brain to store fat rather than use it for energy! Good luck!

Hi! I am an avid crossfitter, but since my divorce, my training has been cut in half with 2 little ones at home. I put on 20 pounds! Ugh… never thought that would happen. My diet wasn’t great either. Anyway…. I just started Evolve Paleo last week – which i LOVE – and am wondering how soon I will start losing some pounds. I feel so much better, just want to lose the weight that I gained over the last 18 months.

It gave me the right motivation. I did have a question.. How much calories should I be eating some calculators tell me 2,000 some tell me 1,200. I currently weight 185 pounds 5’2″ in height. I would suggest tracking your meals for a few days to see how much fat, protein, carbohydrates (as well as calories) that you’re taking in as we often estimate our own food intake badly. I love bread too! And I still eat it sometimes- albeit gluten free- (also Hashimotos) and I live in Portland which is apparently the gluten free capital of the world, so I eat delicious GF french bread, that tastes like real french bread…but I digress. So start with good information: you need to know how many calories you should eat each day for your individual level of activity, and then you’ll need to find ways to stay within your limits. To lose weight, you must use up more calories than you take in. One pound is approximately 3,500 calories.  To successfully and healthfully lose weight—and keep it off—most people need to subtract about 500 calories per day from their diet to lose about 1 pound per week.

It’s not recommended that you count calories while you’re doing this: remember from above that nobody can actually count calories accurately, even when they think they can. Chances are, you’re not an exception. Instead, try building your meals to automatically contain fewer calories, without worrying about the specific numbers:

When you follow a liquid diet, you’ll replace all or most of your meals with commercial protein powder shakes. You can choose the liquid-only approach, in which you’ll drink shakes three or four times per day, or you can decide to replace only breakfast and lunch with the shakes. I approach the problem differently. Rather than focusing on speeding up the metabolism via adrenal hormones (adrenaline, norepinephrine, etc.), I prefer to increase insulin sensitivity. I respectfully disagree with that nutritional philosophy and strongly disagree with the conclusions drawn from that book [7], and will leave you to make your own conclusions based on your own self-experimentation.

First, find a carb level that works for you. When it comes to weight loss, carbs are complicated. If insulin is a fat storage hormone and carbs raise insulin, you’d think that completely avoiding all forms of starch and shooting for ketosis would be the fast track to metabolic healing. For some people, it works that way. But on the other hand, not everyone does well with low-carb; some people actually lose weight faster with a moderate-carb diet. You need that stuff to make energy and happiness and basic bodily functions, and if you have too little of it, chances are your plan is going to backfire and you’ll binge at the end of every day you deprive yourself.

I use a body fat scale and my body fat went from 20.5% to 24% with my weight increase, as well as my clothes fitting snugger, so I know I gained fat. If you are gaining muscle, be encouraged because that is awesome! Your body will now burn more calories. If you are gaining fat, you may be eating too much fat (from the nuts and seeds, which are packed with calories) or you may be not eating enough, if you are being that restrictive.

For example, a cross-sectional study of more than 70,000 people published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2013 found that vegans had, on average, the lowest BMI of people with different dietary habits (ranging from non-vegetarian to vegan), even though everyone ate the same amount of daily calories. And a meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrients in 2014 looked at over 100,000 study participants and found that vegan diets are linked to a lower risk of developing obesity (as well as hypertension, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease). Another meta-analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine in 2015 discovered that people on a vegetarian diet—especially those on a vegan diet—saw better weight-loss results than dieters on other eating plans. Of the more than 1,000 people who followed a specific diet for nine to 74 weeks, vegans on average lost about 5.5 more pounds than non-vegetarian dieters (vegetarians lost about three pounds more than those on a diet that included meat). Still, it’s important to remember that there are so many factors at play when it comes to a person’s weight and health, so you shouldn’t take these findings to mean that adopting a vegan diet will absolutely lead to weight loss.

The body enters starvation mode during periods of very low calorie intake, i.e., weight loss strategies that rely on solely dieting. If the 25 year old female in the example above started eating 900 calories per day, her calorie deficit would be 1,000 calories. Unfortunately, starvation mode causes your body to drastically cut its energy needs. Her deficit would be much smaller than 1,000 calories, slowing or even stopping weight loss.

By planning your meals and logging what you eat and drink, you will start memorizing how many calories are in your favorite meals and ingredients. Phase three is a blessing because it allows me to eat in restaurants, as long as I stay within the limits of my food list. Diet diary: I have tried hard to stay on track but, bit by bit, sugar has started making it’s way back into my diet. At first it was just in the honey mustard dressing and balsamic vinegar I put on my salads. Then it was just a few pieces of bread. On my one cheat day per week I have been having Oreo milkshakes and pizza. 

I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. First, find a carb level that works for you. When it comes to weight loss, carbs are complicated. If insulin is a fat storage hormone and carbs raise insulin, you’d think that completely avoiding all forms of starch and shooting for ketosis would be the fast track to metabolic healing. For some people, it works that way. But on the other hand, not everyone does well with low-carb; some people actually lose weight faster with a moderate-carb diet. You can read all about this in detail here; the short version is: Paleo works because it lets you find the carb level that fits your own body, not because it prescribes one carb intake that everyone has to follow.

I’ve been on this diet for about a week now, but the biggest problem I have is the no beer rule. I know Tim does have wine, but I’d love to know exactly why beer is off limits? My thought would probably be 1) Tim says he prefers wine to beer 2) Beer tends to be high in calories (hence don’t drink your calories) 3) Beer tends to be high in carbs. Unfortunately for me, I’m an avid beer fan, and wine won’t cut it (light beer doesn’t either). Sooo what about something like Guinness Draught? It’s only 126 calories for a 12 oz serving and only about 10g carbs. There is some misleading information about beer containing a lot of maltose (very hight on the GI scale) however, maltose is mostly metabolized by the yeast during the fermentation process. Not to mention the fact that dark beer is also rich in anti-oxidants. So I guess I’m just trying self-justify drinking Guinness in place of red wine. Both options are hard to swallow for a craft beer nut like myself, but Guinness is the lesser of both evils to me. Does this pass muster, chemically/nutritionally?

You could also “make your own version” of the Paleo diet. If you don’t want to, don’t exclude grain products but try to limit processed foods like fake meats, pizzas, maybe white bread? Just bring more variation by adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet (eggs if you’re not vegan) and limiting added sugar, instead of limiting grain products. No one says you have to be 100% strict Paleo to see positive results, there’s a lot of people who don’t exclude dairy or beans from their Paleo diet

I started my journey just cutting carbs. I need to lose a lot of weight. Right now I need to lose 70 pounds to have knee surgery. My cousin recommended Paleo. I tried a modified version of it. The more I read and the more recipes I found here the less “modified” it became. When my doctor told me how proud he was of me yesterday I knew I’d made the right choice. I’m down 22 pounds. I’ve told my mom we are not on a diet it is a lifestyle change. She eats what I fix which is helping her with her weight. I feel better physically and mentally. The great thing is I’ve found recipes I can make and take to school with me including the energy bars. By talking about it on FB and at my physical therapy class, I’ve managed to get 2 other people to try out Paleo. So glad I found this.

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas. It’s a storage hormone: it stores energy for you to use later (either as glycogen in your muscles, or just in your fat cells). Insulin is produced in response to eating either protein or carbohydrates (not just carbs!), and in healthy people it spikes right after a meal to deal with all the energy you just ate and then settles down again to let you run off your stored energy reserves until your next meal.

I think that what is attracting me to this diet is the simplicity. You really can’t argue that a diet free of processed foods is better for your body! I like that there really is no complicated formula or point system to follow, no tracking – just eating the right foods! The way nature intended. The Paleo Diet has been interesting to me for a while, the notion of relying less on processed and packaged foods is liberating!

This is so true! I use this diet to kick start a period of healthier eating. It is pretty low carb. I usually do keto eating afterwards, but I alternate days of very few carbs with “healthy carb days”, so my hormones don’t get too grumpy. 2-3 days of keto eating, then 1-2 days of healthy carbs. It works for me. It makes me get off of processed junkfood- no white flour and sugar. The soup is a great tool for anyone trying to eat keto. You can have as much of it as you want. The soup keeps for like a week, since it doesn’t have meat. It’s cheap, healthy and delicious.

Exercise tips, first 3-4 days keep it to a minimal like just walking and your usual activities. Starting day 5 to 7, I highly recommend walking for 45 minutes extra of your normal activities. No need for fast pace or anything extra, just a nice 45 minutes walk. It will not only burn calories, it will help with your hunger and intake of your last few soup meals. By day 5 to 7 your pot of soup should look low and just enough to finish through day 5 and 7.

When you keep asking the question “Why?” you eventually peel back the hidden layers behind your desire to lose weight. Exercise is simply a brisk walk for 45 to 60 minutes per day. Also golf once or twice a week. I am a 57 year old female who would like to lose another 21 pounds. My advice is to go easy and keep loving your body! It works hard for you. Good luck everyone!

can you make like stir-fry’s? the day you’re supposed to eat all those tomatoes and vegetables can I make like a spaghetti sauce and have it over baked spaghetti squash? or is it best to keep it to raw veggies?

Kris, I’ve been doing gluten free for 2.5 years with the last year being paleo. To date, I have lost around 80 lbs. I am also hypothyroid, but not diagnosed through tests (my tests came back normal) and I take NDT for it. In the last month, I have noticed that I have had to increase my NDT to a crazy 6 grains a day, all the while my hypothyroid symptoms are creeping back up. I have also gained 10 lbs (partly because I went on vacation and had some non paleo meals) a few weeks ago. I am very active as I run a large farm and I get about 6 hours of physical (some of it cardio, some strength and endurance) 365 days a year. I also have started going to the gym a few days a week and doing strength and cardio training. I figure that I am eating between 1500-2000 calories a day, and my BMR is around 1500 calories (at sedentary) and I do at least 1000 calories of activity a day (most likely a lot more than that).

So, less carbs = less glucose in your system, which means your body will have to start burning fat as your fuel source. In other words, decreased fat storage and decreased body fat percentage and increased good-lookingness. Win!

In the last six weeks, I have cut from about 180 lbs. to 165 lbs., while adding about 10 lbs. of muscle, which means I’ve lost about 25 lbs. of fat. This is the only diet besides the rather extreme Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) that has produced veins across my abdomen, which is the last place I lose fat (damn you, Scandinavian genetics). It’s a lot easier to reach for a bag of cookies when you’re feeling down in the dumps, and exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. When happy, however, you want to work out and eat healthy. You lose weight without exercise, without even thinking about it.

You already know to get your dressing on the side because restaurants tend to drown salads with too much. (Learn more ways a salad can make you fat.) But instead of pouring it on or even dipping the leaves in, do the “fork dip.” Stick the tongs of an empty fork into the dish of dressing before skewering any salad. In other words, you’re more likely to exercise and eat smaller portions if you spend time with people who do the same, and vice versa. So choose some fit and healthy friends, and get your immediate family to join you and support your healthy habits.

If we look through the artifacts left behind by our hunter-gatherer ancestors, we won’t find a stair climber, spin bike or barbell amongst the bone fragments and stone tools. For most of human history, exercise was the natural byproduct of living in a world that required movement. Building shelters, hunting and gathering food, dancing and playing games gave our bodies all the stimulation they needed in order to be healthy. Today however, we have the luxury of sedentarism, and we can quite literally move through life without ever moving. At some point along the way, enterprising individuals created gyms as exceptions to the rule, and an entire industry was borne out of our desire for entirely voluntary exercise opportunities. For those of us who are trying to lose weight, we probably think that since being sedentary is bad, exercise is good, and more exercise is even better. Unfortunately, however, the benefits of exercise follow a dose response curve, meaning that there is a point when more isn’t better—it’s actually worse. Unless you are a professional athlete, achieving high levels of movement—and not intense exercise—should be the goal. Instead of sitting at work, implement a standing or treadmill workstation. Instead of driving your car to the store, ride your bike, and if you have to drive, park farther out in the parking lot. If you have the chance to take the stairs, do it. When you go to the playground with your kids, play. The bottom line is that there are ample opportunities to move every day, but we just need to give ourselves permission to take them. Intense exercise, then, is only a supplement to the daily diet of movement that emulates the lifestyle of our ancient ancestors.

Not true for all people, especially those with metabolic disorders. I recorded all food and all activity for 30 days. I decided not to to get on the scale during this time because I wanted to surprise myself at the end. I had a 900-1300 DEFICIT every single day. I should have lost somewhere between 7-12 Lbs. I got on the scale on day 31 and had not lost one single pound. I finally went in and had my thyroid checked and found out I had elevated TSH levels. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was told that calories in vs calories out mean very little when your thyroid does not function normally. I had to eliminate all dairy, gluten, sugar, and all processed foods from my diet which is why I am now paleo. So for those not seeing results, it wouldn’t hurt to get your thyroid checked for underlying problems. Get your thyroid under control and you’ll start seeing results.
